NYC: The Lost Post

So, when we were in New York for 7 days and 6 nights, we happened to see 4 low-level celebrities. In chronological order, here they are.

Liz SheridanThe first was Liz Sheridan or as you probably know her “Jerry’s Mom” on Seinfeld. The second night we were there they blocked off the lounge for a private party. Incidentally, they were also really snooty about it, in fact, all the serving staff at our hotel seemed like they thought they were better than us. No tip for you!

Anyway, we took our money elsewhere, but when we came back and we were waiting for the elevator, she came out (looking a wee bit drunky-drunk) and rushed into the private party.  The only think remarkable is that she’s miniature which makes me wonder how short Jerry is, and how short Jason Alexander is.  TV makes people look bigger.
Benjamin Bratt
Next was Benjamin Bratt or Rey Curtis on Law & Order. He was pushing his baby in a stroller near Washington Square Park. It caused a minor stir in the cafe we were sitting in as everybody tried to tell the person sitting next to them that a celebrity was walking by – but trying to do it without being obvious since they were sitting by a large glass window. Pointing and staring is never cool, especially when the celeb is 2 feet away and can see you.

The third only Marc saw because he’s a basketball coach or something. It’s Larry Brown. He may have been the coach of the Pistons or something, I’m not sure. Marc seemed rather impressed, so he makes the list.

And finally, driving a dagger into my heart because while I was away I couldn’t watch the last 2 episodes of Dexter, was Lt. Laguerta herself, Lauren Vélez. She was coming out of the bathroom as Marc and I were going in. She’s quite pretty in person. (Benjamin Bratt is not, HD is probably killing his career).

And that’s it. I don’t think that’s a bad haul considering New York is such a damnable big place.

More New Yorkness

The best part of the trip so far was the Tenement Museum tour. They’ve preserved one of the tenement buildings in the village to be exactly the way it was at the turn of the century. And instead of being a lot of facts and generalities, the tour focussed on the actual stories of 2 families. They placed their stories in context, of course, but it means a lot more when they can show you pictures of people and you can know how their lives turned out, years or generations later. I’m glad we did it after Ellis Island (immigration museum) because we got the continuation of the story started there. It was really fascinating.

Otherwise, we’ve skated in central park, shopped in SoHo and generally ate and drank our way through the city. And this morning, after many, many $14 cocktails at THOR last night, Marc and I are going to The Essex where we can have 3 cocktails included with our breakfast.

Ah Paris. . .er, New York.

Way To Much To Do

Since being here, Marc and I have checked out the Jewish Museum, Central Park, Rockefeller Plaza, Ellis Island and been through a lot of the major neighbourhoods.

We’ve eaten at Teany, Barrio Chino, Le Pain Quotidien, Nathan’s, Panna II as well as a lot of other quick stops along the way. I’m not ashamed to say we’ve blown through $200 in cash already, and that’s on top of the hundreds already on our credit card.

As of right now, I’d like to state for the record that it is worth it, because I know when I get back I won’t be sure.

I also have to tell you right now, the best place to shop is Century 21. It’s a discount department store! Like winners, but bigger and better! As the receipt told me, I saved $288 on what I bought there.

Nous son Arrivee a NYC!

So, we’re here. We flew, we landed, we checked in, we dropped our stuff and we started exploring. My first impression is that NYC seems like toronto in like 50 years, and if it were on an island and couldn’t just expand north forever.

The only bad thing, is the new point and click camera we got specifically for this trip has crapped out on us. When I click the power button I get the start up screen and then it just freezes there. I don’t know what to do. Obviously I can still return it, but I won’t get any pictures of this trip. And the store has an exchange only policy, so I can’t buy one here.

Tomorrow we’re doing Moma, Jewish Museum, looking at the Guggenheim, Central Park and in the evening Rockfeller Center.

And Alexisonfire is great live, but Cancer Bats are very loud (ears still ringing).
